- Don Norman's "The Descendants of Robert Lowther" reports the marriage of William Dark Lowther and Elizabeth Dotson on Feb 25 1825, which is confirmed through marriage records. But the only issue of that marriage is reported as daughters Mary J. (b. ca 1839) and Phebe (b. ca 1843), for which no basis has been found. This was likely the result of confusion with the family of William H. Lowther (b. ca 1805, son of Jesse C. Lowther & Phebe Cunningham) and Elizabeth Reese, who were married in 1837. The only known children of that William & Elizabeth Lowther, from census records, are Mary J. (b. ca 1839) and Phebe (b. ca 1843).
Some researchers have reported the birthplace of William Dark Lowther as New York, but that is inconsistent with the records. His father is known to have been born in present-day West Virginia and to have raised his family there. William Dark Lowther is known from Family Bible records to have been born on Nov-23-1802, is known to have moved to Ohio not long after his 1825 marriage, and is known from his gravestone in Monroe County, Ohio to have died on Mar-27-1850. The confusion of his birthplace most likely arises from another William Lowther, born ca 1802 in New York, who appeared in the 1850 Census of Mercer County, Illinois with the following family members: Eliza, 43, b. NY; Henry, 17, b. Ohio; Julia, 13, b. Illinois; Salinda, 4. b. Illinois. In 1860, the same family was found in the village of Moline, Rock Island Co, Illinois: Wm. H. Lather [sic], 52, b. NY, shingle packer; wife Eliza A, 47, b. NY; Augusta A, 18, seamstress; Salinda L, 15; Henry J, 28, b. Ohio, and his wife Cyrithia, 20, b. Missouri; Ira Waterman, 32, and his wife Inlia F, 22. The relationship of that William H. Lowther with the Lowthers of this genealogy is not known. His son Henry is known from his death record to have been born May-10-1833 in Ohio, and to have died on Oct-19-1910 in Kirksville, Missouri.
1850 Census, Monroe Co, Ohio (Wayne Twp), enumerated on Sep 26 1850:
Elizabeth Louther, 45; Johnathan, 19; Mary, 15; William, 11; Elias, 7; Sarah, 6. All born in Ohio except for Elizabeth, born in Virginia.
No census record for Elizabeth was found for 1860. Their son Elias Luther [sic] was found in the household of Henry Winland, 22. [2]
