NOTE - The Richard Dotson household enumerated in the 1840 Census, and possibly also the 1830 Census, was likely located in present-day Doddridge County, which did not exist at that time. Doddridge County was formed from parts of Tyler, Harrison, Lewis and Ritchie counties on 4 February 1845.
1850 Census, Doddridge County, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated on July 27, 1850:
Richard Dotson, 56, farmer, cannot read/write; Margaret, 55, cannot read/write; Francis M. (male), 15, farmer. All born in Virginia.
NOTE - The next enumerated household was that of Richard and Margaret's daughter Drusilla Juda [Judy], her husband Jacob and their son Luther. Another nearby household was that of Richard's brother Zachariah and his family.
1860 Census, Doddridge County, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated on July 19, 1860:
