- After serving in the Army in World War II, he worked for Union Carbide in Sanford, TX for nine months, before moving back to Doddridge Co, WV, where he settled in Smithburg. There, along with his brothers Howard and Alton, he began the first milk pasteurization plant in the county, known as the Childers Brothers Dairy. [5]
