Local news item, "West Union Herald," Thursday, Feb 24 1916, in its entirety:
Deputy Sheriff E. Marshall Nutter received a letter from his brother Chester Nutter who lives at Schafer, McKenzie County, North Dakota, in which he states that the weather there has been exceedingly cold, the mercury registering as low as 55 degrees below zero, and while butchering a beef in his barn a few days ago, Mr. Nutter froze his ears, fingers and toes, although he had taken every precaution to protect himself from the extreme cold weather."
