NOTE: Jessie May Temple was born Jun 12 1879 in Marion County, the illegitimate daughter of Julia Ann Union. She was listed as 2-year-old mulatto Jessie Union in the 1880 Census of Fairmont with her mother, who was a cook in a hotel. Julia Union married former slave Philip Sirer Temple (aka Quill Temple, born 1858) in West Union on Apr 13 1882. Quill Temple & Julia had four children together, but he was an abusive husband and father and eventually abandoned the family, moving to Ohio.
