Local news item, "West Union Record," Friday, May 18 1900, in its entirety:
"We are very sorry indeed to record the death of Samuel Smith, which sad event occurred at his home at Central Station on the evening of May 11, 1900. For many months the much dreaded disease consumption had been preying on his vitals until at last he was called and passed away without a struggle. The funeral took place on Sunday and the body was followed to the Summit cemetery where it was peacefully laid to rest. The deceased was a good citizen and leaves a wife and family of children beside a large circle of friends to mourn his departure."
