Event Notes Note (1) Birthdate would be May 12 1860 based on age 82y 11m 22d given in death record, but obituary and headstone state June 12 1860, and obituary gives his age at death as 82y 10m 22d. Name spelled "Jessie" on headstone and in obituary and death record, but "Jesse" in marriage record and wife's headstone. Birthplace from death record, but no birth record found for him in Doddridge Co. The family information sheet completed by his brother David as part of the W. Guy Tetrick survey in 1932 identified him as Jesse S. Gaston, born Jun 12 1860 in Doddridge Co. Note (2) Birthplace of Lucy May Swiger given as Harrison County WV in marriage record, but as Greenbrier County VA in birth record of daughter Rulina. This was probably meant to indicate the Greenbrier region of the border separating Doddridge and Harrison Counties. She was erroneously identified in daughter Rulina's obituary as Rulina Swiger. Note (3) Doddridge County Death Records, Bk 1, p. 42, show a Lucy Gaston, married, age 25y 2m 12d, died Apr 29 1891 at Holbrook, burial at Holbrook. The stated age at death would put birth at Feb 17 1866. The record contains no other information. No other death record for any Lucy Gaston was found in Doddridge Co. Despite the variances in dates, this is almost certainly the same Lucy May Swiger Gaston. Holbrook is located just over the county line in Ritchie Co, about 3 miles from the Gaston-Hart Cemetery. Note (4) A headstone at the Gaston-Hart Cemetery reads "Lucy M., wife of Jesse S. Gaston, born Jan 15 1868, d. May 1 1891." But a double headstone at the nearby Gaston Family Cemetery reads "GASTON - Jessie S., June 12 1860 - May 4 1943 --- Lucy Swiger, Jan 15 1858 - May 1 1891." According to their grandson, Samuel Hileman, Lucy's name was placed on the double headstone, despite the different burial location, simply to identify her as Jesse Smith Gaston's wife. Reasons for the variations in dates and name spelling are not known.
