Event Notes Note (1) Listed as Elizabeth Cowman, 23, single, 4 yrs high school, Registered Nurse, one of many "lodgers" at the National Homeopathic Hospital, c/o 2nd & M St NW. Birthplace incorrectly entered as Distric of Columbia. Note (2) Prior to World War II, Elizabeth Cowman was a nurse with the American Red Cross. In April 1942, she became the first nurse from Doddridge County to volunteer for the Army Nurse Corps. She served in Australia and the Philippines as a First Lieutenant with the 42nd General Hospital, and was discharged with honor in January 1946. Awards: AP Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, four O/S Service Bars. Her Class A uniform was donated to the Doddridge County Historical Society's museum, where it is on prominent display.
