Event Notes Note (1) Military records show that on July 23 1864 at West Union, Emery (sic) Malone enlisted in the 5th W.Va. Cavalry for a term of three years. He mustered in on the same day. He was described as age 18, born in Doddridge County, 5'8" in height, gray eyes, brown hair, light complexion. His unit was later designated Co G, 6th W.Va. Cavalry. He was captured by Confederate forces at the Battle of New Creek on Nov 28 1864 and was confined at Richmond (probably Libby Prison, since Belle Isle had closed in Oct 1864) on Dec 7 1864. He was paroled from Richmond on Feb 15 1865, presumably due to illness, and sent to the Union faciltiy at Camp Chase, Ohio. He arrived there on Feb 19 1865 and formally went on the Camp Chase rolls on Feb 24 1865. Within one week, he was furloughed from Camp Chase and sent home. A letter in his file from T. K. Knight, Clerk of Circuit Court, dated Apr 7 1865, states that Henry Malone testified that his son Emery Malone was furloughed from Camp Chase on March 1 1865, and that he died at home in Doddridge County on Mar 15 1865. Doddridge County Death Records show that Emory T. Malone, son of Henry & Sarah, age 17y 9m 12d, died of starvation on March 15 1865. NOTE: The state-issued Civil War medal intended for Emory Malone was never claimed and remains in storage at the West Virginia State Archives in Charleston. http://www.wvculture.org/history/archives/medals.html Note (2) Listed as Ingle Malone, 19, common laborer, cannot read/write, in household of Wesley & Frances (Fleming) Rollins. Note (3) Not with his family in the 1860 Census.
