Moore's date, place and cause of death are documented in his military records and are considered to be reliable. There is also a death record on file for him in Tyler County, West Virginia, with conflicting details of his death, namely that he died on April 1 (rather than April 7) 1865, and that he "starved in Confederate Prison," rather than dying in a hospital of chronic diarrhea (dysentery). The Tyler County death record (DR p. 21, Line 40 : http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=5065906&Type=Death ) was essentially a report of death filed by his father, and it is considered less reliable than the military records. Note (2) Military records show that Washington P. Moore enlisted as a Private in Co M, 6th W.Va. Infantry, on 19 Oct 1861 in West Union, Doddridge County, (W)VA. He later served as a Private in Battery A and B, 1st W.Va. Light Artillery. He was taken as a prisoner of war at least once. He died 7 April 1865 in the hospital at Annapolis, Maryland, of chronic diarrhea.
