Dickens, white male, widowed, age 25, nationality Irish, born in Caroline Co Virginia, occupation laborer; died Feb 3 1889 at Smithton, cause of death "run over by cars." Burial in Smithton on Feb 4 1889. Informant: Joseph Cheuvront, West Union, undertaker. (NOTE: Middle initial given as G in 1880 Census. Unclear which is correct. "Run over by cars" would refer to train cars, as Smithton (now Smithburg) was the location of a B & O Railroad depot. The Smithton burial location is presumed to refer to Archbold Cemetery, where his mother was buried some years later.), DR. p. 16 : www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=5048546&Type=Death. Married Oct 15 1885 "at the residence of Owen Breniger" by F. J. Ashburn, a Minister of the Gospel. (Note: Wife was the widow of Sanford Male, not Maley. Event Notes Note (1) Marriage date given as 1872 in wife's obituary. But the 1900 Census, which shows that they had been married for 45 years, puts it in about 1855. Note (2) Age in 1880 Census puts birth in about 1835, 1920 Census puts it in about 1833. But 1900 Census states birth date as Sep 1829, while obituary specifies Sep 29 1830. Note (3) Age was 11 months at time of June 11 1880 census enumeration, putting birth in about July 1879. Conflicting with this is age 4y 9m at time of her Dec 29 1883 death, putting her birth in March 1879. The July 1879 date would appear to be more reliable. The original birth record entry is unreadable. www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=2608206&Type=BirthName Index
