Event Notes
Note (1) Age 91y 1m 27d in death record calculates to a birth date of Jan 14 1801.
But age 52 in 1860 Census puts it in about 1808.
Note (2) Age in census records would but birth between 1822 and 1825. But age in
death record puts it at Jan 15 1819.
Note (3) Birth date given in 1900 Census as May 1845, but obituary and death record
state Dec 29 1845. But age 11 in the 1860 Census puts his birth in about 1849.
Although his obituary and death record give his birthplace as Virginia, his
marriage record states Greene County, Pennsylvania. At the time of his birth,
the border separating Greene Co, Pa, and Monongalia Co, (W)Va, was not
well-defined.
Note (4) Although his obituary and death record state that he was buried at the
Victory (Baptist) Cemetery, his marker is actually found at a nearby cemetery,
the Wolverton Cemetery. According to "Doddridge County Cemeteries," Vol I, p.
123, the Wolverton Cemetery "was started after the small cemetery beside the
Victory Baptist Church was filled. Sometimes referred to as the new Victory
Baptist Church Cemetery in the West Union Record. Also referred to as the
Powell or Victory Cemetery in the WPA 1933 reading."
Note (5) The state-issued Civil War medal intended for Thomas S. Powell was never
claimed and remains in storage at the West Virginia State Archives in
Charleston.
Note (6) Age 9 in 1860 Census puts birth in about 1851.
Note (7) Identified in 1860 Census as Callister Powell, age 8, which would put birth
in about 1852. Birth date given in 1900 Census as Apr 1857, but in death record
as Apr 16 1856. Birthplace not given in marriage record, but listed as Virginia
in 1900 Census and as Doddridge County in death record.
Note (8) Identified as Clista Ann Hennings, 84, widowed, grandmother in household of
Charles & Hattie (Henning) Freeman.
