Event Notes Note (1) Local news item in the "Central News" column, "West Union Herald," Thursday, Dec 14 1916, in its entirety: "Jess Bircher has once more accepted the coal shoveling position for the B & O; he is now working at night." Note (2) Birth date given in death record and obituary as Oct 17 1881, age 85 at death. But ages given in 1910 thru 1940 censuses consistently put birth between 1888 and 1890. In the 1900 Census, in which she was identified as Amanda Bircher, her birth date was given as Oct 1887. Date on grave marker is also reported as 1887. Note (3) Birth date given in 1900 Census as Jan 1891, age 9. Birthplace given in obituary and death record as Berea, Ritchie County. But Doddridge County birth records indicate that she was born on Jan 13 1895 at Central Station, Doddridge County. However, this was a delayed entry filed in 1948 by her brother Milburn, so there is some question as to its accuracy. Note (4) There are two conficting records of this birth, both of them delayed entries filed by her brother Milburn. The filing on Jun 29 1951 states that she was born to Mack Bircher and Martha Jenkins at Central Station on Jun 6 1896. This is the same birth date that she gave at the time of her marriage, and which is given in the 1900 Census. But another delayed entry was filed on Oct 1 1956, stating that she was born in Doddridge County on Jun 6 1895, which is the date given in the Social Security Death Index. In both cases, she was the 6th child born to her mother.
