"Davis - The Settlers of Salem, West Virginia," p. 101, reports birth date as Sep 30 1871, while his death record shows it as Sep 30 1870 and his headstone is also 1870. The 1870 Census of his family, enumerated on Jul 12 1870, lists "(Not Named) Davis", male, age 8 months, birth month September. But since Ernest was listed as age 8 in the 1880 Census, the unnamed child was apparently another one who died in the interim. We have found no records to support or disprove that analysis. Note (2) at the residence of Asher Childers Note (3) Birth date given in 1900 Census as Aug 1876, but age was 20 in Feb 1894 marriage record, and birth date on headstone is 1873. Her birth record shows it to be Aug 11 1873. Birthplace given in marriage record as Doddridge County, but birth record indicates Tenmile District of Harrison County.
