Note (1) Served aboard the minesweeper U.S.S. Dextrous (AM-341) in the Mediterranean
in 1943-1944 (Anzio beachhead in preparation for invasion, and southern France)
and in the Pacific in 1945-1946 (Pearl Harbor, Guam, and Okinawa in connection
with the U.S. 3rd Fleet's final raids on Japan).

From a news article in the West Union Herald of February 1, 1945:
"Bertie O. Pernell, S 1/c, has been in the Navy two years.  He trained at
Great Lakes and has been in active service 14 months.  He was in the invasion of
Southern France, Italy and other ports in the Mediterranean area.  He has
reported back to Norfolk, Va., for orders."
