C, 25th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, on 10 June 1861. While skirmishing with the enemy at Camp Alleghany, Virginia on 13 December 1861, under command of General Milroy, he was wounded on his left side by an enemy musket ball. He was taken to hospital at Huttonsville, stayed there four weeks, then sent home on furlough for three months. But the wound left him seriously disabled and led to him being honorably discharged on 14 Apr 1863 at Brookes Station, Virginia. He filed for an invalid's pension on 29 October 1866. The effects of his wounds led to his death on 5 May 1868 at Oxford, Doddridge County, W.Va. There is no death record on file for him, and the place of his burial is not known. His wife Mary filed for a widow's pension on 6 August 1868. Having remarried in March 1870, she filed for a minor's pension on 7 April 1870. Note (4) Birth dates of 6 Sep and 9 Sep 1866 have been reported. His headstone has only the year 1866.
