Note (4) In April 1846, on his first visit to Doddridge County, Joseph H. Diss Debar stopped at the inn operated by Ephraim Bee at Lewisport (now Blockhouse Hill). While there, Diss Debar happened to meet Daniel Sherwood, as described in this excerpt from Diss Debar's "Reminiscences of Doddridge County." "At the mention of land on Cove Creek, a modest mannered young man, with an honest eye, and an expansive white forehead, who before dinner had been busy at a writing table in a corner, informed me that he had some knowledge of that ancient survey and I concluded at once that he might be of service to me. Noticing that he was then engaged in drawing very good maps on rather poor paper, I climbed on top of the coach and opening a trunk, extracted from it half a dozen sheets of superior article which he accepted with grateful surprise. Such was my first meeting with esteemed old neighbor, Daniel Sherwood, one of the most clever and unassuming men and able, conscientious surveyors I ever met." https://www.doddridgecountyheritageguild.com/doddridge-count y-through-the-eyes-o Note (5) In 1850, he was enumerated with his family, listed as Samuel T. Sherwood, age 21, farmer. In the same census in Doddridge County, he was also enumerated with the family of John J. & Mahala (Inghram) Ingle, listed as Todd Sherwood, age 22, b. in Pa, laborer. His relationship with the Ingle family is not known, but it is probably not coincidental that Ingle's father, Ezra Engle, was a gunsmith in Tyler County. John J. Ingle himself was a physician, born in Pennsylvania.
