Based on newspaper accounts, James Powell's death resulted from an armed attack by three men, Ralph C. Richards, Roscoe M. Cross and Samuel Elliott. They were charged with murder and tried in Doddridge County. Their convictions resulted in sentences at the WV State Penitentiary in Moundsville, where all three were found in the 1930 Census. What provoked the attack is not clear.
