(Note: The ledger-style record book contains only a listing of marriage licenses issued. A corresponding record book of subsequent marriages has not been found. In this case, however, the diary of Flavius Josephus Ashburn states that he did obtain the marriage license on Oct 11 1852 and that the marriage took place on Oct 14 1852 at the home of Joel Davis. The minister was T. T. Henderson.), MR p. 4 : www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=11789578&Type=Marriage. Event Notes Note (1) According to the diary of Flavius Josephus Ashburn, James M. Strother died before 1852, the year that Ashburn married Strother's daughter Nancy. James may actually have died before 1850, since he was not present for the 1850 Census Note (2) According to "Davis - The Settlers of Salem WV," p. 69, Aaron Arden Strother died in Harrison County before 1870. However, the Diary of Flavius Josephus Ashburn, p. 73, in an entry for July 1861, states "On Sunday the 7th, that evening Nancy and I went by way of New Salem to Lucinda Strothers. (I would have wrote to Arden Strothers instead of Lucinda Strothers, but Arden, having lost his right mind, has put his property out of his hands and left his family and went off with an ornery girl.)" Note (3) On Jun 6 1852, William Fitz Randolph, in a letter to Western Lunatic Asylum director Dr. Francis J. Stribling regarding his son Waldo F. Randolph, wrote: "I suppose Reuben Strother is with you. His friends desire me to ask you to write to them. They are very anxious to hear from Ruben." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_State_Hospital_(Virginia) https://opacity.us/site162_western_state_hospital_virginia.htm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MI1OE56xHAA https://youtu.be/HWNFDf8urHw https://youtu.be/dUGhBYz2RKo https://youtu.be/gNsRWNB62jc Note (4) Age in 1850 and 1870 censuses would put birth in about 1833.
