Nicholson and Susan Nicholson were first cousins. Event Notes Note (1) Civil War Service Records pertaining to James M. Nicholson state "Died June 15 1863, of disease at Convalescent Camp, Va. A paroled Prisoner of War. Was captured at Greenland Gap, W.Va., Apr 25 1863." (Note: Greenland Gap is in Hampshire County. Regimental history records state "Co. A and a company of the 23d Illinois Infantry fought and defeated a superior force under the Confederate Gen. Jones at Greenland Gap in April 1863, inflicting terrible punishment upon the enemy, who finally surrendered." Total casualties of the 14th W.Va. Infantry during the War included 88 killed or mortally wounded, and 157 who died of disease or accident.) Other records pertaining to James M. Nicholson show that he was at the Confederate prison camp in Richmond from May 4 to May 14 1863, when he was paroled presumably due to illness. He was sent to Washington DC on May 20 1863, and then to the Convalescent Camp near Alexandria, Va., on May 29 1863.)
