- When Will registered for the draft in June 1917, he entered his full formal name. He stated that he was born in St. Clara on September 2, 1892, and that he was a current resident of St. Clara. But he filed his registration with a Lewis County draft board, possibly because of the location of his employment. He gave his occupation as an oil field laborer for the South Penn Oil Co. in Fink District No. 2. He was single, had no dependents, and did not claim exemption from the draft for any reason. His physical description was entered as medium height and build, dark blue eyes, dark brown hair, and slightly bald. When he signed the form, his signature was "William Droppleman," with the first name "John" squeezed in afterward.
