- Military records show that William R. Towner enlisted in 1861 in Company E, 6th (W)Va. Infantry. He was captured by the Rebels at Bridgeport on April 30, 1863, probably as part of the Jones-Imboden Raid through northwestern Virgina, He was held prisoner, but was eventually paroled. He returned to duty on October 3, 1863. It was during his period of captivity that his father was killed at Beverly. There's no way to know when he learned of his father's death, possibly not until he was released months later. William R. Towner was sick in hospital from February 1864 until October 6, 1864 when he was discharged upon expiration of his service obligation. He returned home to Doddridge County, where he died on March 16, 1865. His cause of death was listed as starvation, which may have referred to the effects of some underlying medical condition, perhaps related to his prior hospitalization.
