    • First name has appeared variously as Almina and Elmina, although the latter is by far the most predominant. Middle name Ellen obtained from birth record of son James P. Smith. Although her marriage record indicates her middle initial as C, this may be a matter of interpreting the handwritten entry. Headstone clearly reads "Elmina E."

      There are two entries for this marriage: MR Bk 1-B, p. 21, shows that the marriage license was filed/issued on Jan 4 1858. MR Bk 1-A, p. 122, shows that the marriage occurred in Doddridge Co on Jan 5 1858. At first glance, the latter entry looks like July 5 1858, but closer examination of the elegant handwritten entry reveals that what appears to be "July" is actually "Jany," the common abbreviation for January in those days.
