"Corp. Roy S. Underwood, 25, who has been serving with the Army Air Corps in the European theater, died December 28th, 1943, as a result of drowning in an attempt to rescue crew members of a plane which crashed into the sea near Watergate Beach, England, according to word received by his widow, Mrs. Regina Swisher Underwood, and his mother, Mrs. Gertrude Underwood, both of West Union, from the War Dept.
"A son of the late Clay Underwood of West Union, Corp. Underwood attended Doddridge County High School, and was employed in airplane factory work in Ohio before entering the service. He received technical training at Seymour Johnson Field, Goldsboro, N.C., before going overseas several months ago. He had one brother, First Sgt. James Underwood, the first volunteer to enlist in the Army from Doddridge County, now serving overseas.
"Survivors include his widow and his mother; two sisters, Mrs. Elaine Gragg of Columbus, Ohio, and Ada Ellen at home.
"Underwood was a nephew of Mrs. Harry Brown of Spring Ave. and Mrs. Luella Smith of the Fordyce Bldg, Clarksburg."
