"The files of the Merchant Marine Personnel Records and Welfare Section show Sterling Franklin Reed, born 11th of October, 1906, in Lost Creek, West Virginia, obtained Seaman's documents necessary for employment on merchant vessels of the United States on July 7, 1941.
"He signed on the S.S. David McKelvy, operated by Tidewater Associated Oil Company, as able seaman on April 20th, 1942, at Baltimore, Md. This vessel was lost through enemy action on May 14th, 1942, and as a result of the casualty Mr. Reed was presumed lost and reported missing by the Commandant, R. H. Farinholt, Lt.U.S.C.G.R.(T).
"Sterling Reed was the son of Clarence E. and Anna Garrison Reed, who operated a hotel in West Union for several years; his wife was Ethel Lenore Cumberledge Reed and resides in Clarksburg at this time. They had no children."
