    • Birth date given in death record as Feb 23 1842. But headstone shows it as Feb 21 1840, and his age was 20 at the time of his 1860 marriage.

    • Civil War records at the National Archives (fold3.com) show that Hiram Jennings hired a substitute to serve his military obligation. The substitute was a black man named Vincent Sandy of Co. G, 127th US Colored Infantry (Private). Vincent Sandy died in the Corps hospital at Point of Rocks, Virginia, on 5 Feb 1865. No cause of death listed. However, other records in his military file say that he died on Feb 9th or 10th, his cause of death given as pneumonia.

      Vincent Sandy's military service is recognized on Plaque D-133 at the African-American Civil War Memorial in Washington, DC.

      Just like another African-American Civil War veteran, George Revels of Doddridge County, Vincent Sandy's medal remains unclaimed at the West Virginia State Archives. Anyone proving descendancy or close relationship can claim it. He was age 22 in 1864 and born possibly in Stafford County, Virginia. Inscription on Vincent Sandy's Civil War medal: "45th USCT."
