- Citing obituary and other sources, the West Virginia Veterans Memory Project at the State Archives reports Earl Stutler's burial at Stanley (aka Antioch) Cemetery, near Sherwood in Doddridge County. His death record states only that burial was at Sherwood, WV. But Ramage's book of Doddridge County cemeteries does not list him at Stanley Cemetery. Rather, Cochran's book of West Union cemeteries does list him as having a marker at Masonic Memorial Park Cemetery at Crystal Lake, near West Union. A search at findagrave.com confirmed that listing, complete with photograph. It thus appears that he was disinterred and reburied. The possibility cannot be discounted, however, that a memorial marker was placed for him with other family members at the Masonic cemetery, while his remains are still interred at Stanley Cemetery.
Although his death record and newspaper accounts of his death give Earl Stutler's middle initial as "J", his headstone and the 1900 and 1910 censuses show it as "L". His birth record shows his full name to be Earl Layton Stutler. Nearly identical death records were filed for him in Ritchie and Wood counties, with yet a third much less informative record filed in Doddridge County.
