- Along with a brother, Walter Fields McWhorter served in the same unit as his father Henry, who was killed in battle at Greenbrier River in Pocahontas County on Jan 22 1863. Walter was captured and sent to Libby Prison. He was exchanged after three months, returned to his unit and was promoted to commissary sergeant.
Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Commissary Sergeant in the Union Army in Company E, 3d West Virginia Cavalry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action at Deatonsville (Sailor's Creek), Virginia on April 6, 1865. His citation reads "Capture of flag of 6th Tennessee Infantry (C.S.A.)."

From the "Seventh Day Baptist Yearbook", 1877, p 12.
"Bro. McWhorter was born in Lewis county, West Virginia, became a Sabbath-keeper on his conversion in 1857, was ordained deacon of the Middle Island Church in 1870, and died on the 17th day of May, 1877, of a disease of the lungs contracted while serving in the army."
