    Notes 
    • Thomas Beau Hickman and his brother Fillmore owned and edited the West Union Record, the first successful newspaper ever published in Doddridge County. He had served as superintendent of the water works in West Union for 18 years, served as town police for several years, and worked for the B&O Railroad as a fan operator at the Central Station tunnel. He came to West Union at the age of three and spent his entire life in the family home on Wood Street.

      Local news item, "West Union Herald," Thursday, May 25 1916, in its entirety:
      "Thomas Hickman, the veteran town pumper, and Earl B. Kinney, town sergeant, tendered their resignations to the town council last Monday night at the regular session. Both resignations were accepted, and D. B. Knight, better known as "Chick," was appointed pumper and Bailey Knight appointed town sergeant."

      Local news item, "West Union Herald," Thursday, Sep 16 1926, in its entirety:
      "Water Supt. Thomas Hickman and son Burley are engaged in repairing the road on East Main Street. This brick was dug up in order to fix the water main some time ago, and the holes in the pavement made it very uncomfortable for the traveling public." [2]
