    • Death date on headstone is Dec 18 1861. But that is believed to be in error. On page 86 of his transcribed diary, Flavius Josephus Ashburn, a teacher and Baptist minister, states that on August 31, 1862, he and his wife Nancy attended the funeral service for William J. Spencer at Little Flint. Officiating at the service was William James, following which an "exhortation" was rendered by Flavius Ashburn himself. Ashburn's diary, which spans the years 1853 to 1867, is a detailed chronological accounting of his activities during that period of time. Its entries have been found to align consistently with events confirmed from other sources. On that basis, it appears that William J. Spencer died in late August 1862, rather than the December 1861 date on his headstone. The style of the headstone, front-and-back with his wife's on a common base, suggests that it was not made until her death in 1879, and that the wrong death date was provided for William. There are no death records in Doddridge County for the years 1861-1864, presumably because of the turmoil of the Civil War.

    • 1860 Census, Doddridge Co, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated on Jun 15 1860:
      Jack Spencer, 53 (sic), farmer, value of real estate $800, value of personal estate $20, married within the year, cannot read/write; C. S. Spencer (female), 18, married within the year, cannot read/write.
      NOTE: Age 53 entered for the man is clearly in error, probably intended to be 23. William J. Spencer was age 14 in the 1850 Census and age 22 at the time of his 1859 marriage to Catharine Salome Kinney.

      In the 1870 Census of Doddridge County, the widowed Catharine Spencer and her son Snoden, as well as her parents, were found in the household of her brother Snoden Kinney. [7]
