    Notes
    • Susie Davis Nicholson, in "Davis - The Settlers of Salem WV," pp. 67-68, lists seven children for this family, omitting Eleanor. She states:

"There appears to be missing children between the first and second. This has to be, we think, the family that lost seven children to diphtheria and buried them in a little plot by the stream where Tom's Fork meets Meathouse Fork Creek. When I was a child, this little cemetery stood just north of the iron bridge that spanned Meathouse Fork. The bridge was washed away in the flood of 1950 and was replaced by a cement bridge.
"The cemetery was enclosed with a plank fence and was overgrown with weed and brambles. I well remember the story as told by the Alvin Randolph family, who lived nearby, of how a BEE family had had their children reaped early by the dread disease and had buried them there by the stream. It is very probably that the nearby Middle Island Cemetery had not yet been established. The children must have been buried there in the 1830's. This could have been none other than the children of Amaziah & Rhoda.
"The board fence, briars, brambles and bridge are gone now, and few in the area remember the story of the family's tragic loss. Sheep graze over the little knoll where a single unmarked stone stands as a sentinel to mark this tragedy of the past." [8, 9, 10, 11]
