- Regarding Thomas S. Neely, Ned Jones' 1901 "The History of Smithburg" states:
"Uncle Tommy Neely, as he was called, had no children of his own, but always had two or three of somebody else's and must have raised seven at least, but I do not know what became of them excepting one case, that being the wife of John Boyce."
The 1830 Census of Harrison Co, Virginia (now West Virginia), showed that Thomas S. Neely had one female slave, age 10-23.
1850 Census, Doddridge Co, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated on Aug 6 1850:
Thomas Neely, 53, farmer, value of real estate $2,400; Elizabeth Neely, 50; Jain Caton, 19; Thomas Shannon, 22, laborer; John Shannon, 19, laborer; Jeremiah S. Miller, 12; Daniel Limer, 3. All born in Virginia except for Elizabeth, born in New Jersey.
NOTE: John Robert Shannon (1830-1916) was a son of Gamble Shannon & Content Davis. Relationship to Thomas Shannon is not known. Identities of the other household members have not been determined.
The 1850 Federal Census Slave Schedule for Doddridge County, enumerated on Jul 16 1850, contains the following entry:
Slave owner: Thomas Neely
Description of slaves:
1 mulatto female, age 20
1 black male, 12
1860 Census, Doddridge Co, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated on Jun 2 1860:
Thomas S. Neely, 66, farmer, value of real estate (blank), value of personal estate $725; Elizabeth Neely, 63; Dan Lymer, 13; Floyd Inghram, 11; Mary Jacobs, 7. All born in Virginia.
The 1860 Federal Census Slave Schedule for Doddridge County, enumerated on Jun 1 1860, contains the following entry:
Slave owner: T. S. Neely. Description of slave: Mulatto female, age 12.
