    • A portion of Mark Davis' obituary in the West Union Herald, Thursday, Dec 9 1915, focuses on his father:
      "Mark Davis lived practically all his life in Doddridge County, and for many years ran a blacksmith business at Long Run. He went to Clarksburg some sime since to stay with one of his chidren. He was the son of David D. Davis, who was one of the pioneers of this section of the state, having come from New Jersey in the early part of the 19th century, in the days of the deer, bear and wild turkey, and settled on the head water of Buckeye Run about four miles east of Salem at the mouth of Tar Kiln Run at the place known as the 'Toll Gate.' He helped build the North Western Turnpike, and for many years kept the toll gate, and also kept a tavern for the entertainment of guests traveling the pike, which in the old days was very lucrative. Joshua D. Davis, a son, now lives at the old place. Mark Davis was an honest and concientious man and had many friends in the neighborhood of Long Run and Salem."
