  	According to his obituary, Joseph Napoleon Gulley was the "last Confederate soldier living in Doddridge County and one of the few remaining in West Virginia." His obituary further states: "As a youngster, Gulley enlisted in April 1862 at Buckhannon, as a private in Company E, Twentieth Confederate Cavalry, a part of Jackson's brigade and Ewell's corps. Later he became a sergeant. He fought with the Confederates throughout the war, participating in many encounters in the Valley of Virginia, including those of Cedar Creek, a prelude to the second battle of Bull Run; the capture of Harper's Ferry, and the battle of Sharpsburg or Antietam. Gulley at his death still carried the scars of wounds suffered at the battle of New Market and in a skirmish at Huntersville, near Elkins."
