    Notes 
    • Received his medical degree from the University of Edinburgh, then joined the Royal British Navy as a surgeon. He was with the fleet in 1762 when Havana was taken by the British in the Seven Years' War between England and France. He was stricken with dysentery and left the navy for the American colonies to regain his health. He settled in New Bern, NC, sometime before May 1764. He was shot to death by Tory Captain John Cox in full view of his wife. He was a Captain in the North Carolina Militia.
