    • Civil War records on file at the Doddridge County Court House indicate that Josiah [sic] Hart enlisted in the Union Army on Dec 2 1861 and was discharged on Dec 1 1864, with the rank of Private. His unit was Company M, 6th Regiment, West Virginia Volunteer Infantry. His birth was reported as 1829 in Maryland, his death as Feb 14 1909 at Joy, Doddridge Co, and his burial at the Hart Cemetery on the Hart Farm in Joy. Cause of death: pneumonia. His residence was listed as Joy, and his next of kin as J. W. Hart (relationship not indicated), Oxford Route 1, WVa.

      Identified as Josiah Hart, white male, widower, age 80, born in Maryland, farmer; died Feb 14 1909, cause of death pneumonia.

      There are two entries for this marriage, MR Bk 1, pp. 33-34, and MR Bk 1-B, p. 17, the latter giving Aug 24 1853 as the date the marriage license was issued. The ceremony itself was held Aug 25 1853. Groom identified as Josiah Hart, age 24, born in Baltimore MD. Bride identified as Mary Mathew, age 18, b. Preston County. Her given age would put birth in about 1835, but 1900 Census gives her age as 68 and states her birthdate as Jan 1832. MR Bk 1 listed bride's parents as Humphrey & Sarah Ann Mathew, but MR Bk 1-B identified her father as Overfield Matthews.
