- Obituary, "Doddridge County Republican," Thursday, October 24, 1918:
SALATHIEL E. HYDE WINS GOLDEN STAR
Salathiel E. Hyde, son of Mr. E. S. and Mrs. Flory B. Hyde, was born Oct 2, 1897 and died while in the service of his country at Camp Lee, Va., at 3 o'clock p.m., Oct. 2, 1918, just as he had reached the 31st milestone on Life's Highway.
The last sad rites were conducted at the Welcome Baptist church near the home of his parents on Big Battle, Wednesday, Oct. 9th, by Rev. H.H. Hoey, pastor, and the interment services were in charge of undertaker Perine, of Salem. Services were conducted at the grave by the brethren of Center Point Lodge No. 174 I.O.O.F.
Called to the service May 26, 1918, this spendid young soldier entrained here for Camp Lee, Va. on that date, and became a member of Co. D, 2nd Development Bn, 155th D.B., with which he trained until his fatal illness came upon him.
For home and country he has given all; for the Stars and Stripes he has given his life. Greater sacrifice than this, God cannot permit men to make.
