- In the late 1940s, Jay Spurgeon and his twin brother Charles opened the Spurgeon Brothers Funeral Home in West Union. For a period of three years, his ventures led him to Mt. Vernon, Ohio in the dairy farming industry. Returning to Glenville in 1958, he became an employee of the McGee Funeral Home until November 1962, when he opened Spurgeon Mortuary, Inc. and ambulance service in Glenville, where he served as president and chairman of the board until his retirement in April 1983.
