JAMES A. GARFIELD HAYS
James A. Garfield Hays, son of Christopher and Sylvia Hays, deceased, died of pneumonia at the Hampton Roads Hospital Sept. 28, 1918, aged 24 years, 11 months and 19 days.
Called from his home with his grandmother, Mrs. Sophia Dye of Big Battle, Aug. 3, 1918, he entered the service of his country and began training at the U.S. Naval Base, Hampton Road, Virginia, where death claimed him. He was a member of Unit J.
Two half-brothers, residing with their grandparents in Tyler, and the aged grandmother who reared him to manhood after the death of his mother in his early infancy, mourn their loss.
The remains arrived at Salem Wednesday, Oct. 2nd, and the funeral services were conducted at Center Point by Rev. Perine at 2:00 p.m. that afternoon.
(Note: The surname Hays was misspelled Hayes throughout.)
