- 1870 Census, Doddridge Co, WV (West Union Twp, West Union Post Office), enumerated on Jun 9 1870:
Alfred Jennings, 32, farmer; Virginia, 30; Hannah F. Randolph, 68; Laverna Knight, 22, housekeeper; Elias Jeffrey, 22, farm hand. All born in Virginia except Alfred, born Pennsylvania.
(NOTE: The adjacent household was that of Amos Bee, son of Doddrige County legend Ephraim Bee and second cousin (on his mother's side) of Alfred's wife Virginia F. Randolph.)
1880 Census, Doddridge Co, WV (West Union District), enumerated on Jun 3 1880:
Alfred Jennings, 46, merchant; wife Virginia, 38; dau Cora, 18 (sic); son Chas, 16 (sic).
(NOTE: Ages of children Cora and Charles are clearly incorrect. They should have been entered as 8 and 6, as other records show that they were born in 1871 and 1874 respectively. No street name, house number, or other indication of exact location was given in this census. Neighbors on one side were the family of merchant Joseph Cheuvront, and on the other side the family of merchant J. B. Markey, and then the family of merchant B. H. Maulsby. Given the four consecutive merchants, it is likely that these were storefronts with living quarters in downtown West Union. Furthermore, land records show that property purchased by Alfred Jennings in 1865, referred to as the Gallahue Store House, was sold by him or his estate in 1884 and was then acquired in 1888 by G. W. Twyford, proprietor of the prominent Twyford Store on Main Street, West Union, at the corner of Cottage Avenue.)
