- Minnie Kendall Lowther's 1911 "History of Ritchie County," p. 258, contains the following entry regarding the family of Jonathan Coburn Lowther:
"JONATHAN C. LOWTHER was another pioneer on this stream [Otterslide]. And though he is now a nonegenarian, he is still a familiar figure here. He is the son of Elias Lowther and the only surviving grandson of Col. William Lowther. He married Miss Emza Neal, sister of M. A. Neal, of Pullman, and since her death in 1906 [sic, should be 1904], he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. William Jett. He is the father of one other daughter, Mrs. Rebecca Bee, of Rutherford; and William Lowther, of California, is an adopted son."
1860 Census, Ritchie Co, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated on Aug 15 1860:
Jonathan C. Lowther, 41, farmer, value of real estate $1.200, value of personal estate $1,206; Emzy M, 36; Saphrona, 15; Catharine R, 9; Wm. W. Ringer, 5.
NOTE: No other record of this William W. Ringer has been found. But the possibility cannot be discounted that he is the aforemention adopted son and the William W. Lowther appearing with this family in 1870 and 1880.
1870 Census, Ritchie Co, WV (Union Twp), enumerated in June 1870:
J. C. Lowther, 51, farmer; Emsy M, 45; Catharine R, 19; William W, 15; Mary, 77, occupation "Retired Keeping House." No relationships given in this census, but Mary would appear to be the first cousin of Jonathan Coburn Lowther.
1880 Census, Ritchie Co, WV (Union Dist), enumerated on Jun 22 1880:
Johnathan C. Lowther, 61, farmer; wife Emsy M. Lowther, 55; cousin William Lowther, 24, farmer; son-in-law Charles W. Bee, 31, farmer; dau Rebecca Bee, 29; grandson Elton Bee, 1; granddau (not named), age one month, b. May 1880.
NOTE: William Wesley Lowther was a son of Napoleon B. Lowther and Mary Jane Ireland. Although his relationship was indicated here as cousin (technically, first cousin once removed), Minnie Kendall Lowther's "History of Ritchie County," p. 258, states that "William Lowther, of California, is an adopted son" of Jonathan C. Lowther. William Lowther's California death record lists his mother's maiden name as "Nail."
1900 Census, Ritchie Co, WV (Union District), enumerated on Jun 1/2 1900:
Jonathan (corrected from Johnathan) C. Lowther, 81, b. Mar 1819, farmer, married 66 yrs; wife Emzy M, 75, b. Jun 1824, married 66 yrs, mother of 2 children (both still living).
NOTE: This census supports Minnie Kendall Lowther's contention that Emza Neal Lowther had just the two biological children and that William Lowther was an adopted (or possibly foster) son. It appears that William Wesley Lowther was most likely a biological son of Napoleon B. Lowther and Mary Jane Ireland.
From Minnie Kendall Lowther's "History of Ritchie County" (1911) regarding Jonathan C. Lowther:
"He is now (1910) ninety-one years of age, and is as active as a boy, being able to jump up and crack his heels together. He enjoys the distinction of being the only surviving grandson of Col. Lowther."
