1830 Census, Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated date not recorded:
    Household of Hugh Gaston:
1 male, age 40-50 (this would be Hugh)
1 male, age 15-20 (probably Daniel)
1 male, age 10-15 (probably Eli)
    1 male, age 5-10
1 female, age 40-50 (this would be Susannah)
1 female, age 15-20 (probably Anna)

1840 Census, Lewis County, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumeration date not recorded:
    Household of Hugh Gasting (sic):
1 male, age 50-60 (this would be Hugh)
1 female, age 30-40 (probably Anna)
    1 female, age 10-15
1 female, under age 5 (probably Credella)

1850 Census, Lewis County, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated on Oct 3 1850:
Hugh Gaston, 62, farmer, b. New Jersey; Elizabeth Gaston, 48, b. Virginia; Henry H. Gaston, 9, b. Virginia; Credilla Gaston, 11, b. Virginia; Amanda Washburn, 24, b. Virginia.

1860 Census, Lewis County, Virginia (now West Virginia):
    Hugh Gaston, 72, farmer, b. New Jersey; Elizabeth Gaston, 58, b. Virginia; Henry H. Gaston, 18, b. Virginia; Amanda S. Washburn, 34, b. Virginia; Marion H. Gaston, 8.

    1870 Census, Lewis County, WV:
Hugh Gaston, 81, farmer, b. New Jersey; Elizabeth Gaston, 67, b. Virginia; Marion Gaston, 17, farm laborer, b. Virginia; Amanda Washburn, 43, b. Ohio, cannot write.

1880 Census, Lewis County, WV (Freeman's Creek), enumerated on Jun 2 1880:
Hugh Gaston, 91, farmer, b. New Jersey, both parents b. New Jersey; wife Elizabeth Gaston, 77, b. Virginia, both parents b. Virginia; step-daughter A. Washburn, 53, b. Ohio, both parents b. Virginia.
(NOTE: Hugh Gaston is identified by some researchers as Hugh H. Gaston, based on a mistranscription of this census. His name clearly is entered as Hugh Gaston, with no middle initial.)

    Birth:
Birth date calculated from age at death, 100y 1m 21d, stated in death record. This varies by one day from the age stated in his obituary, 100y 1m 20d.

Hugh married Susana JETT 12 Dec 1811, Harrison Co, (W)VA. Susana was born CA 1788; died Bef 1840. [Group Sheet]

  4. 25.  Susana JETT was born CA 1788; died Bef 1840.

    Other Events:

    • Census: 1830, Harrison Co, (W)VA

    Notes:

No record of the parentage or other information of Susana Jett has been found.

We previously reported her birth date as "bef 1798," source not documented. But that would have made her only 13 at the time of her 1811 marriage. Then we found the 1830 Census giving her age as between 40 and 50. That puts her birth sometime between 1780 and 1790. It is likely that she was born toward the end of that range, based on Hugh's known 1788 birth date.

In Book 2, p. 388, of Harrison County Marriage Bonds is a record of a bond of $150 being paid by Hugh Gaston and James Coberly (spelling may be Cubberly) in connection with the marriage of Hugh Gaston and "Susana Jett of full age." It is unknown what relationship existed between James Coberly and Susana Jett. We have found only that a James Coberly (b. 1779) and wife Letitia "Tisha" Jett (b. 1783) were residents of Harrison/Gilmer Co in that time period.

A W. Guy Tetrick family information survey completed by great-grandson Ira Dow Gaston in 1931stated that his grandparents were Hugh Gaston, born 1788, died July 5 1888, and Susana Jett, born "unknown," daughter of "unknown," they were married in 1811, and she died May 1 1849. The reported death date is considered suspect,, since she did not appear in the 1840 Census of the Hugh Gaston household, so it is assumed that she died prior to that undated enumeration. Hugh is known to have remarried on June 1 1848.

    Notes:

There is considerable evidence to show that William D. Leeson was married to a woman named Mary and that he had a mistress named Nancy Wise who sometimes lived with them and by whom he fathered several children, all of whom had the Leeson surname. Further confusing matters is the fact that he had an unmarried sister also named Nancy, who also sometimes lived with him. The following entries are an attempt to sort out and analyze the evidence regarding the relationships between these individuals and their children.

William Leeson had a daughter named Erzilla who was born about 1838.
She married Isaac R Ellifritt in September of 1859.
William called her Mary Erzilla Ellifritts in his will.
In the chancery records, when William's land was divided, she was called Mary E. Ellifritt.
Erzilla's marriage record lists her parents as William and Mary.

William Leeson's death record lists Mary as his wife.

In the 1850 Census, Erzilla's mother is Mary Leeson.
In another household in the 1850 Census, Nancy Wise is living with her sons (Jackson, Jacob, Thomas, Eli, Leroy), all with surname Wise.

In the 1860 Census, both Mary Leeson and Nancy Wise are residing with William Leeson.

In the 1870 Census, Nancy Leeson and Nancy Wise are residing with William Leeson. Nancy Leeson & William Leeson are indicated as having foreign-born fathers, consistent with being siblings.

Leonidas Leeson's marriage record lists parents as William and Mary.
Pleasy Leeson's marriage record lists parents as William and Mary.
John P Leeson's marriage record lists parents as William and Mary.
John P Leeson's death record lists parents as William and Mary.
Hannah Leeson's parents are identifed in Bolster's Lowther genealogy as William Leeson and Mary Jane Wise.

Eli B Leeson lists his parents as William and Nancy on his marriage record.
Eli B Leeson is listed as a child of Nancy Wise in William Leeson's will.

Leroy Leeson's death record lists parents as William D. Leeson and Nancy Wise.
Leroy Leeson is listed as a child of Nancy Wise in William Leeson's will.
Leory Leeson's marriage record lists William and Nancy as his parents.

Jacob Leeson's marriage record lists William and Nancy as his parents.

Thomas D Leeson's marriage record lists William and Nancy as his parents.
Thomas D Leeson is listed as a child of Nancy Wise in William Leeson's will.

In William Leeson's will, Nancy Wise is listed as the mother of Jacob, Jackson, Thomas D, Eli B and Leroy.

In 1850, she was head of household with her five sons. In 1860, she was in the household of William Leeson and his wife Mary.

    Died:
Records on file at the Doddridge County Court House show that on March 17, 1896, Nancy Wise's son Leroy Leeson was appointed Administrator of the estate of "Nancy Wise, deceased." Administrator's Bond was posted by Leroy Leeson and Leonidas Leeson in the amount of two hundred dollars. Although the document's year at first glance appears to be 1876, closer examination reveals that the ink skipped in the formation of the upper part of the "9" and that the year is indeed 1896. The preceding and following pages in the bound volume of Administrator's Bonds are also for March 5 1896 and April 11 1896, respectively. Reports of Nancy Wise's death on Aug 25 1880, based on a headstone for Nancy Leeson at Cabin Run Cemetery, are incorrect. That is the headstone of Nancy Leeson, age 79, unmarried sister of William D. Leeson.
