Notes:

The Methodist Protestant Church was introduced into Doddridge County, WV by Eli Morris Gaston and his brother Daniel. These two young men came onto the headwaters of Hughes River in 1843 and purchased several thousand acres of wooded land where they established homes. Eli and his wife Rulina set up housekeeping in a one-room log cabin on Gaston Run in December 1846. Later they constructed a two-story log home where they spent their entire married lives. This house burned down in 1910. Property consisting of 214 acres on Middle Fork of Hughes River, 11 miled southeast of the court house, was formally conveyed to Eli by his brother Daniel in 1847.

In 1846 the Gaston brothers succeeded in having a Methodist Protestant minister come into the new settlement and preach at Eli's home. Arrangements were made for regular services, and the people built a log house for school and church services. The new house was named Harmony because of the fine spirit of harmony and cooperation among the people composing the new settlement. In 1866 the old log house was replaced by a neat frame building which served the congregation until 1901, when a large modern house of worship was built. The Reverend Mortimer Ireland (b. 8/8/1835) was pastor at that time. Charter members included Eli Morris Gaston and Daniel Gaston and their wives, J. E. Strother and his wife, John Hart and wife, S. M. Gaston and wife, and Samuel Richards. Others who joined later included R. Husk and wife, Isaac Hileman and wife, John I. Gaston and wife, T. W. Chapman and wife, J. S. Britton and wife, and George Pierce and wife. This was considered to be the best congregation of its denomination in Doddridge County.

A newspaper memoriam in the West Union Record of Feb 12 1909 indicated his death date as Jan 28 1909, also reported by family members. But Doddridge County death records indicate Jan 27 1909.

No information regarding the parents of Rulina Lowther has been found. A copy of her obituary was located, but although it specified her birth as Aug 12 1825 in Harrison County, it made no mention of parents or siblings. Harrison County in 1825 encompassed a much larger area than it does now, so her birthplace may actually have been in present-day Doddridge County, which was created in 1845 from parts of Harrison, Tyler, Ritchie and Lewis Counties. A reference in one printing of her obituary to her and husband Eli having "20 children" was clearly a typographical error intended to be "10," as another printing stated that they had "ten children."

It was once thought that her actual first name was Pauline, but that is now considered doubtful and was probably the result of a clerical error. The original handwritten death record for her son John Morris Gaston, on file at the WV State Archives, identifies his mother as Rulina Lowther, while the corresponding typed death record for him on file in Harrison County identifies her as Pauline Lowther. Since this was the only time that the name "Pauline" has been noted in original records, it was presumably a misreading by the typist of "Rulina" on the original handwritten document. Similarly, the obituary of her son Eli Clark Gaston identified her as Rebecca Lowther, the only time that that name has been noted and is presumably a misprint intended to be Rulina. With these two exceptions, all other references to her are as Rulina (misspelled Relina in her handwritten marriage record). The only reference we have found of her middle initial was in the 1910 Census, which clearly identified her as Rulina A.

Family information sheets completed by her son David Dow Gaston and grandson Ira Dow Gaston identified her as Rulina Lowther, born Aug 12 1825 in Harrison Co, died Sep 30 1911. The space for the names of her parents was left blank on the form filled out by David, while Ira's stated that she was the daughter of "Unknown."

The only photograph we have of Rulina Lowther was found among other family photographs. Three of her grandchildren and one niece were named Rulina.

Family members give birth date as Aug 12 1826. But Doddridge County Death Records give age at death on Sep 30 1911 at 86y 1m 18d, putting birth at Aug 12 1825. Also, 1900 Census states her age as 74 and her birth date as Aug 1825. The 1860 Census shows her age as 35, while the 1870 Census has it as 44.

No record of the parentage or other information of Susana Jett has been found.

We previously reported her birth date as "bef 1798," source not documented. But that would have made her only 13 at the time of her 1811 marriage. Then we found the 1830 Census giving her age as between 40 and 50. That puts her birth sometime between 1780 and 1790. It is likely that she was born toward the end of that range, based on Hugh's known 1788 birth date.

In Book 2, p. 388, of Harrison County Marriage Bonds is a record of a bond of $150 being paid by Hugh Gaston and James Coberly (spelling may be Cubberly) in connection with the marriage of Hugh Gaston and "Susana Jett of full age." It is unknown what relationship existed between James Coberly and Susana Jett. We have found only that a James Coberly (b. 1779) and wife Letitia "Tisha" Jett (b. 1783) were residents of Harrison/Gilmer Co in that time period.

A W. Guy Tetrick family information survey completed by great-grandson Ira Dow Gaston in 1931stated that his grandparents were Hugh Gaston, born 1788, died July 5 1888, and Susana Jett, born "unknown," daughter of "unknown," they were married in 1811, and she died May 1 1849. The reported death date is considered suspect,, since she did not appear in the 1840 Census of the Hugh Gaston household, so it is assumed that she died prior to that undated enumeration. Hugh is known to have remarried on June 1 1848.

Andrew Nutter, age 59, born in Virginia, occupation farmer; Malinda Nutter, 59, b. Virginia; Sarah Nutter, 17, b. Virginia; Elizabeth Nutter, 13, b. Virginia; Julia Warren, 25, b. Virginia; Willis N. Warren, 3, b. Ohio; Elizabeth Nutter, 93, b. South Carolina. All four of the adults in the household were indicated as being unable to read and write.
NOTE: The surname for Willis Warren was originally entered as "Nutter," which was lined out and replaced with a ditto mark under "Warren" of the preceding line. The surname for Elizabeth, whose entry followed Willis's, was entered simply with a ditto mark directly under the lined out "Nutter." Although this gives the appearance of indicating Nutter as her surname rather than Warren, the intention of the enumerator is not clear. Since the resulting 1757 birth date differs significantly from the 1770 date reported by other researchers, this was presumably not Andrews's mother, Elizabeth Cottrell Nutter.
