Notes for: Sarah Spence Mott

As stated in her marriage bond of Sep 14 1807, Sarah Spence Mott was the ward of James Fleming. Confusingly, in her marriage record three days later, she was identified as Hannah Spence Mott. No other reference to her as Hannah has been found. She is sometimes incorrectly identified by researchers as Sarah Fleming.

1820 Census, Harrison Co, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated on Aug 7 1820:
Head of household: Sarah Jaco. All household members listed as free and white.
1 male, age 10-15
1 female, age 26-44
1 female, age 10-15
1 female, under 10

1830 Census, Harrison Co, Virginia (now West Virginia):
Head of household: Sarah Jaco. All household members listed as free and white.
1 male, age 20-29
1 male, age 15-19
1 female, age 40-49
1 female, under 5

Sarah was not found in the 1840 Census.
In 1850, she was in Ritchie County in the household of her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth & James H. Terry.
