J. L. Hickman, 34, farmer, value of real estate (blank), value of personal estate $100; S. S. (female), 30; W. C. (male), 12; F. L. (female), 8; M. E. (female), 5; A. (female), 3; V. (female), 3. All born in Virginia.

NOTE: The next enumerated household was that of Henry & Nancy (Williams) Ellifritt and their five children. In late 1861, four of those Ellifritt children, plus a fifth one born after the census, died of diphtheria within a two-week period. Two weeks after that, the two youngest Hickman children, twins Allis and Virginia, also died of diphtheria.
