William Bates, 27, b. Dec 1872, day laborer, married 7 yrs; wife Mary, 29, b. Apr 1871, married 7 yrs, mother of 2 children (both still living); son Augustus, 5, b. Aug 1894; son Alpheus, b. Jan 1896.
(NOTE: Information pertaining to this couple's length of marriage and the wife's children is incorrect. Records show that they were married in Dec 1898, following the death of Williams' first wife (married in 1894) earlier that year. The two children were William's by his first wife, and their reported birth dates are incorrect based on other records. It is likely that Mary was the informant for this enumeration, as her stated birth date was the only one that conforms to other records. William's actual birth date was Jan 22 1872, based on his 1920 marriage record and his death record. Son Augustus' actual birth date was Jan 10 1895, based on his WW I & WW2 draft registrations and SSDI. Son Alpheus' actual birth date was May 11 1897, based on his headstone and his age in his death record.)

1920 Census, Wetzel Co, WV (Magnolia District, Town of Brooklyn), enumerated on Jan 6 1920 on Foundry Street:
William N. Bates, 47, laborer in B & O Railroad yard; wife Mary, 48; dau Elma J, 17; dau Alma E, 17 (twins).
Mary died in November 1928. William remarried Cora Martin Johnson McElfresh in May 1929.
