1850 Census, Ritchie County, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated on July 22 1850:
William W. Lowther, 56, farmer; Melison, 57; William M, 25; Lorenzo D, 24; Armstrong, 22; Archie, 19; Rebecca, 18; Granville L, 15; Alex M, 14; Mary J, 11; Sudna, 8.

From obituary of daughter Rebecca Lowther Young (1832-1915):
"At the time Mrs. Young's father moved to what is now known as Cairo in 1838, he purchased from the old McKinney estate the tract of land now covered by Cairo, that is all east of the river, which was in woods at that time. We have often heard of the cornfield that covered that side of the town. Mrs. Young's father sold the B & O Co. the lot of ground now occupied by them as a depot and loading ground. The Cairo Mercantile Co. is on this tract. In the early days of Cairo, the Lowthers were prominent in the building of the town."
