Her mother died nine days after giving birth, and her father remarried 3-1/2 years later. Mary Agnes was raised by her grandparents, Judge George W. & Mrs. (Agnes) Farr. She was a granddaughter of Lewis M. Maxwell, and a great-granddaughter of Chapman Johnson Stuart.
