From an undated newspaper clipping: "The high school auditorium of Smithfield was crowded by the friends and school mates of Miss Eva Phipps Wednesday evening when a double surprise reception was rendered her on the occasion of her birthday and in recognition of her victory in the Red Haired Beauty contest conducted by the Clarksburg Telegram a short time ago. Miss Phipps won this contest from a large field of contestants from every section of the state, and after she finishes her term of school this week, she will make preparations for an extended tour of the eastern states as the Red Headed Beauty Queen of West Virginia. ... After her tour east, she will re-enter Fairmont Normal school to complete her summer school work."
