Local news item, "Doddridge County Republican," Thursday, July 6 1916, in its entirety:
"S. H. Garner of McClellan was in our town Saturday, jolly and lively as ever. It's a mighty cold day when Simon H. can't have some fun out of somebody, and as Saturday could not be classed as a day of that sort, he made some of the best local Democrats the targets for his shafts of humor, be tellin' them there would not be any war unless Mexico declared it."
